Zoomars at River Street Ranch: A Family-Friendly Animal Adventure in San Juan Capistrano

Looking for a fun and educational outing for your kids? Whenever school is out, finding activities that blend entertainment with learning becomes a priority for parents. Luckily, places like museums, zoos, and observatories are always a hit with children. During our last winter break, we discovered a gem that perfectly fits this bill: Zoomars At River Street Ranch, a charming petting zoo nestled in San Juan Capistrano. This family-owned and operated farm has been delighting visitors for over thirty years, offering a unique and hands-on animal experience.

Our first stop upon arriving at Zoomars was the delightful Guinea Pig Gulley. This dedicated area is home to numerous guinea pigs, most of whom are incredibly gentle and love interacting with people. My children were immediately captivated, happily sitting amongst these furry creatures and offering them treats.

For a small fee, you can purchase a basket filled with fresh fruits and vegetables perfect for feeding the animals. Our basket was brimming with carrots, lettuce, apples, and broccoli – a generous portion easily shareable between two children. This interactive feeding experience is a highlight for kids, allowing them to connect with the animals directly.

A helpful tip for your visit: pace yourselves when feeding the animals at Zoomars! It’s tempting to give all the food to the first group of animals you encounter, like my children initially wanted to do with the guinea pigs. However, save some of your treats! The Kunekune pigs, bunnies, donkeys, goats, sheep, emus, llamas, and other residents of the farm are equally eager for a snack. Spreading out the feeding makes the fun last longer and ensures all the animals get a chance to interact.

My son has always had a special bond with animals. Whether we’re at a large zoo, a local dog park, or even a pet store, animals seem naturally drawn to him. Zoomars was no different. Observing his gentle interactions with all the creatures at the ranch, it makes me wonder if a future in veterinary medicine might be in his path. That would certainly be beneficial for our own pet care expenses!

Beyond animal feeding, Zoomars offers even more for families to enjoy. After we had finished visiting all the animal enclosures, our family and friends spent time playing in the corn box, a large sandbox filled with dried corn kernels instead of sand – a unique sensory experience for kids. The ranch also has a playground area, providing another space for children to burn off energy and have fun.

For those looking for additional activities, Zoomars provides fee-based options such as a mini choo-choo train ride, horse and pony rides, and panning for gems at the Miner’s Gulch. These extras can enhance your visit and offer different types of entertainment for children of various ages.
