Discovering Zut Restaurant: A Berkeley Gem on 4th Street

When strolling down 4th Street in Berkeley, the name “Zut Restaurant” immediately sparked a memory. It was a nostalgic echo of Zut, a dog from my Berkeley past in the 70s. Zut, along with his owner Denny, resided in a cozy little cottage tucked behind a larger house, a place shared with the Arkansas Sheiks, Karana Drayton’s folk group featuring the talented fiddler Laurie Lewis.

Denny and Zut were a musical pair. Denny played the piano, and Zut would join in with soulful howls. Zut and my own dog, Kangaroo, were great companions, often seen exploring the neighborhood together, their adventures frequently leading them to Bulky Burgers on the corner, hoping for a tasty handout.

During a recent Tuesday evening sketching session on 4th Street, curiosity led me to inquire about the restaurant’s name. The hostess warmly directed me to a mural inside, where a charming portrait of Zut was proudly displayed. She confirmed that Denny Abrams, indeed the Denny from my memories, was one of the restaurant’s owners. This delightful connection made Zut Restaurant more than just a dining spot; it was a place with a story, a Berkeley story.
