Protecting your Cash Assistance, SNAP, and HEAP benefits from theft is now easier with the EBT card freeze feature. This important security measure allows you to block unauthorized transactions and safeguard your funds against scams.
When you receive a new EBT card, the freeze feature is initially disabled. To utilize this security, you must first activate your card. Once activated, you have the power to freeze and unfreeze your card as needed, providing an extra layer of protection for your benefits.
What Happens When Your EBT Card is Frozen?
Freezing your EBT card puts a temporary halt on certain activities, preventing unauthorized use. When your card is frozen, you will not be able to:
- Make Purchases: All purchase attempts will be blocked.
- Check Your Balance: Accessing your balance at ATMs or point-of-sale systems will be restricted.
- Complete In-Person Transactions: Any transaction requiring you to swipe your card, including ATM withdrawals, will be unavailable.
However, freezing your EBT card does not completely lock you out. You can still:
- Change Your PIN: You retain the ability to update your Personal Identification Number for security purposes.
- Process Online Returns/Credits: If you need to return an online purchase and receive credit back to your card, this function remains active.
It’s important to note that freezing your EBT card only affects specific transaction types. Your Medicaid benefits and payments made directly to your landlord or utility companies will continue without interruption.

Important Information for Previous Card Lock/Unlock Users
If you previously used the “Card Lock/Unlock” feature on the older portal or mobile app and had your card “locked” as of May 18, 2024, it’s crucial to understand that this feature is now called “Card Freeze/Unfreeze” within the new ebtEDGE system. To regain access to your funds, you must use either the new ebtEDGE cardholder portal or the ebtEDGE mobile app to “unlock” or “unfreeze” your card. This step is necessary before you can use your card again.
By utilizing the EBT card freeze feature through the ebtEDGE portal or mobile app, you can take proactive steps to protect your benefits and ensure they are available when you need them.
