From Local Studio to 53rd Street Stage: A Dancer’s NYC Dream Realized

It all began when I was just ten years old, during a trip to New York City with my dance studio. The city’s vibrant energy was captivating, and I made a promise to myself that I would return to “live my dream” here. The pivotal moment came when I faced a setback at a high school contest. The disappointment was intense, but the very next morning, an audition for the Orlando Ballet was scheduled. My mother encouraged me to go, reminding me, “You love to dance.” Despite my initial reluctance, I attended the audition. As soon as I started to dance, I felt a complete shift in my emotions. Dance took over, and I was accepted into their summer intensive program. That summer became one of the best experiences of my life, forging friendships that continue to this day. It was during this time that I realized dance was not just a hobby; it was my career path. Whenever sadness or negativity crept in, dance became my solace, instantly making everything better. It’s a sentiment echoed by many dancers – dance truly has a transformative power. This realization solidified my decision to pursue dance professionally.

Furthermore, the feeling of performing on stage, especially in a city like New York, in front of an audience, is unlike anything else. Sharing something deeply personal and providing entertainment is a gift that dance offers, and it resonates deeply within me. This indescribable feeling is what I cherish and what fuels my passion every time I perform. It’s the core reason why I continue to dance and perform for others, striving to bring that magic to audiences, perhaps even one day on a stage near 53rd Street, in the heart of New York’s bustling performance scene.

Marymount Manhattan: My 53rd Street Launchpad

With my sights set on a professional dance career, I knew I needed to be in New York City. I focused all my energy on one option: Marymount Manhattan College. There was no backup plan, no other applications sent. Marymount, located near the vibrant 53rd Street area, was my sole target. In February, my mother, sister, and I flew to New York for the audition. Ironically, I was battling a stomach virus and felt incredibly ill the day before. Despite feeling under the weather, I somehow managed to deliver what felt like my best dance performance yet. Immediately after the audition, they informed me of my acceptance into their dance program. I was overjoyed, completely ecstatic. We rushed out of the studio and embraced in a tight hug, jumping up and down in the freezing cold, sharing the exciting news with our family. A major snowstorm was brewing, and the audition was almost canceled because of it. It was a whirlwind of emotions and events, a moment I will never forget. The photos from that day perfectly capture our sheer joy and perhaps a touch of craziness. Had I not been accepted, I honestly don’t know where I would be now or what path I would have taken. It was Marymount or the unknown. Looking back, I couldn’t be happier with how everything unfolded, leading me to pursue my dreams in the city I love, near the energy of 53rd Street.
