Hoping for a Miracle on Anita Street: Supporting Tucson’s Beloved Anita Street Market

Anita’s Street Market in Tucson, a cornerstone of the city’s rich gastronomic scene, is facing a critical juncture. This cherished neighborhood market, deeply rooted in the Barrio Anita community just north of downtown Tucson, is striving to overcome financial difficulties that threaten its closure. For the residents of Barrio Anita and beyond, Anita’s Street Market is more than just a store; it’s a landmark woven into the fabric of their community, a place where traditions are savored and flavors tell stories of generations.

The history of Barrio Anita stretches back to the early 20th century, and Anita’s Street Market has been a vital part of this neighborhood’s identity. Known throughout Tucson for its exceptional burritos and handmade tortillas, the market has become a culinary beacon, drawing in locals and visitors alike. However, current owner Gracie Soto is grappling with significant financial challenges that jeopardize the future of this beloved establishment. Gracie inherited Anita’s Street Market from her grandmother, Grace Soto, the visionary founder who established it as a neighborhood staple. Gracie’s dedication is evident as she juggles every aspect of the business, from serving customers at the front to preparing food in the kitchen and managing operations behind the scenes.

The weight of potential foreclosure from private lenders looms large, with a deadline set for January 17, 2024. This isn’t the first time Anita’s Street Market has faced a daunting financial hurdle. Back in 2020, Gracie confronted a staggering $265,000 IRS debt due to unpaid payroll taxes dating back to 2009, a consequence of previous accounting mismanagement. Through sheer determination and resourcefulness, she managed to borrow funds and settle this massive debt, demonstrating her commitment to preserving her family’s legacy.

Now, once again, the community is rallying to support Anita’s Street Market. Neighbors from across Tucson’s barrios have united to launch a GoFundMe campaign to raise $20,000, aiming to provide Gracie with the financial lifeline needed to keep the market afloat. Arianna Luna, the GoFundMe organizer, eloquently captures the community’s sentiment: “We all love her story, her family legacy and of course their family recipes… Lets come together as a community and help bring this business back on its feet. And continue with the Tucson staple!”

Adding to these community efforts, Anita’s Street Market is hosting its annual community event, “Nana & Tatas Miracle In Barrio Anita,” which will this year take on an even greater significance as a crucial fundraiser. This special event, scheduled for December 23rd from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the market located at 849 N. Anita Ave., will offer menudo, champurrado, nachos, raffles, and a bake sale, all in the spirit of raising funds and community cheer. This annual event is traditionally a time for the Soto family to give back to the community, and this year, they are hoping to draw strength and support from that very community.

Gracie Soto expresses profound gratitude for the outpouring of support. “These customers mean the world to me. I am here because of them,” she states, highlighting the deep connection between Anita’s Street Market and its loyal patrons. “The market would not be where it’s at without them. I am just grateful for the love and the support.” As Tucson comes together to support this cherished local gem, the hope for a miracle on Anita Street grows stronger, fueled by community spirit and the enduring legacy of Anita’s Street Market.
