The Apple store located in the Derby Street Shops in Hingham has officially reopened its doors, nearly two months after a devastating SUV crash that resulted in one fatality and numerous injuries. The reopening of the Apple Derby Street location on Wednesday marks a significant step for the community, accompanied by visible enhancements to ensure customer safety.

Following the tragic incident on November 21st, which claimed the life of 65-year-old Kevin Bradley and injured 20 others, Apple has implemented a robust safety measure at its Derby Street store. A series of approximately two dozen steel barriers now stand guard in front of the storefront, acting as a protective buffer.

Kevin Bradley, an employee of GMS Construction, was tragically moving barriers outside the Apple Derby Street store with a colleague when he was struck by the vehicle just moments before it crashed into the building. The police report detailed the horrific scene and the immediate aftermath of the crash.

The driver of the Toyota 4Runner, 53-year-old Bradley Rein from Hingham, faces serious charges in connection to the incident. Rein was arraigned in Hingham District Court on November 22nd, charged with motor vehicle homicide by reckless driving and reckless driving. He was released on $100,000 bail with restrictions including a driving ban and the need for court permission to leave Massachusetts. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 9th.

According to the official police report, Rein claimed that the crash occurred because “his right foot became stuck on the accelerator and his vehicle accelerated uncontrollably.” Rein also stated to authorities that he had no pre-existing medical conditions that would have impaired his driving ability and that his vehicle was regularly maintained. A blood alcohol test confirmed that he had no alcohol in his system at the time of the crash at the Apple Derby Street location.

The reopening of the Apple store at Derby Street Shops signifies a move towards recovery for the shopping center and the wider Hingham community. While the steel barriers serve as a constant reminder of the recent tragedy, they also represent a proactive step taken to protect shoppers and staff at the Apple Derby Street store moving forward.
