Inside, the expansive 800-foot center platform is a standout design element. This platform allows for effortless transfers between the Red, Blue, and Green lines, eliminating the need for passengers to navigate across tracks and enhancing the overall flow of transit.
A Landmark Reimagined
Originally situated in a valley west of East 55th Street, the initial station was inconspicuous and less accessible. However, the new East 55th Street Rapid Station marks a significant upgrade in both visibility and convenience. Reconstructed at the northeast corner of I-490 and East 55th Street, the station now acts as a prominent landmark, easily identifiable and reachable for both pedestrians and drivers. This relocation underscores a commitment to integrating public transit more effectively within the urban landscape.
Slavic Village Icon
The dedication of the East 55th Street Rapid Station on October 11, 2011, by RTA officials marked the culmination of over a year of construction and seven years of planning. This $9.4 million project is not only ADA compliant but also serves as an iconic structure within the Slavic Village neighborhood. Its aesthetic appeal is matched by its functional versatility, making it a valuable asset to the community.
Located in the St. Hyacinth area of Slavic Village, the station’s modern design was intentionally chosen to represent the neighborhood’s forward-looking spirit. The incorporation of a stone facade pays homage to the numerous churches in the East 55th Street area, blending contemporary design with respect for the local architectural heritage.
Architect Ken Emling from Richard L. Bowen + Associates, Inc., the station’s designer, aptly described its significance: “Now the community and RTA have a new, 21st-century station that rises up from track level above the 55th Street bridge and signifies a new beginning for this entire area.”
Public Art Integration
The East 55th Street Rapid Station experience extends beyond mere functionality, incorporating public art as an integral part of its design. The station itself, with its purple and cement facade, can be viewed as an artistic statement. Beyond this, two featured art pieces further enhance the station’s ambiance:
- Space, Speed and Time: A mural by renowned public artist Shan-Shan Sheng. This installation features 25-30 vibrant panels depicting train tracks, strategically placed in the bridge walkway to interact with natural light, creating dynamic visual effects.
- Motion Figures: Michael Murphy, also known for the Stephanie Tubbs Jones bust at the Transit Center at CSU, contributed colorful red figures within the stairwell and fences. These figures are arranged in sequences to capture the essence of motion and movement inherent in public transit and train travel.
Award-Winning Excellence
The East 55th Street Rapid Station’s commitment to excellence was recognized in December 2011 when RTA received an Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Ohio. This award acknowledged the project’s high degree of achievement, value, and ingenuity in engineering. It stands as a testament to the dedication and innovative approach taken in creating this essential transit hub on East 55th Street.
