For Chicagoans and those familiar with the city’s culinary landscape, the name Gale Street Inn evokes a sense of tradition and quality dining. Growing up in the city, many remember Gale Street Inn as a cherished spot on Milwaukee Avenue, north of Lawrence in Jefferson Park. It was, for many, a go-to family restaurant, a place for special occasions and comforting meals. While the original Chicago location holds a special place in many hearts, a new chapter unfolded with the opening of Gale Street Inn in Mundelein, also known as “Diamond Lake.”
Initially, some Chicago loyalists approached the Mundelein location with a touch of skepticism, wondering if it could capture the same magic as its city counterpart. However, recent changes and a renewed commitment to quality have transformed Gale Street Inn Diamond Lake into a destination worthy of attention in its own right, while still carrying the spirit of Gale Street Inn Restaurant Chicago.
A Supper Club Vibe Just Outside the City
Located in Mundelein, Gale Street Inn Diamond Lake offers a different ambiance than a typical Chicago restaurant. As you approach the stand-alone building with its spacious grounds and expansive dining area, a distinct “supper club” feeling emerges. This is a place that feels like a true escape, a departure from the urban hustle. The atmosphere is designed for relaxation and enjoyment, hinting at evenings filled with not just fine dining, but also potential entertainment, reminiscent of classic supper clubs. The welcoming dining room is thoughtfully arranged, accommodating various party sizes and ensuring a comfortable and intimate dining experience.
Stepping inside, you’re transported to a setting that feels both sophisticated and warmly inviting. The location, slightly removed from the city’s core, contributes to this sense of escape. Situated near Diamond Lake, the surrounding area exudes a tranquil, almost rural charm. The moment you settle into your seat with a cocktail in hand, the cares of the day seem to melt away. While the realities of the outside world might require a mask upon entry and exit, within the dining room, a sense of normalcy and indulgence prevails.
Exceptional Service and a Menu to Explore
The service at Gale Street Inn Diamond Lake is a highlight of the experience. Our server, Mario, embodied a relaxed yet attentive approach, allowing ample time to peruse the extensive menu and daily specials. The wine list is notably comprehensive, catering to a wide range of preferences. While they may not have a signature cocktail, the well-stocked bar ensures classic choices are readily available.
To begin our culinary journey, we sampled a trio of appetizers: Steamed Mussels, described as meaty and outstanding; crispy Fried Calamari; and delightful Meatballs with Polenta. The Lamb Lollipops, observed en route to another table, are already marked as a must-try for the next visit. The Lobster Bisque, the fresh soup of the day, proved to be an exceptional choice, especially on a Friday evening. While the Baked French Onion Soup is a daily offering, opting for the fresh, daily soup is highly recommended.
From Prime Rib to Gluten-Free Options: A Menu for Everyone
The menu at Gale Street Inn Diamond Lake is remarkably comprehensive, featuring a wide array of salads and entrees. The Roasted Beet Salad, a vibrant mix of red and gold beets with a tangy house dressing, was a standout. The portion is generous enough to share, though beet enthusiasts may find themselves wanting more.
For main courses, the Gale Street Prime Rib (queen cut) was a star – slow-roasted, tender, and served with a classic beef au jus and baked potato. The Half Slab of Ribs, a house specialty since 1963, lived up to its reputation. The new owners have clearly maintained the tradition, delivering ribs that are cooked to perfection and paired wonderfully with creamy mashed potatoes.
The Broiled Salmon Piccata, served with spinach in a lemon beurre blanc sauce, was another exceptional entree, earning high praise. Beyond these highlights, the menu boasts a wide selection of meat and fish dishes, with fresh seafood brought in daily. Families will appreciate the dedicated Kids Menu, making it a welcoming spot for diners of all ages. Pasta dishes, “surf and turf,” Lamb Chops, and a Prime New York Strip further expand the choices, promising something for every palate.
Notably, Gale Street Inn Diamond Lake caters to dietary needs with a menu that is 90% gluten-free. The emphasis on fresh ingredients and preparation ensures that every dish is not only delicious but also thoughtfully crafted.
