It’s generally unnecessary to request permission to utilize our mapping products for purposes outlined in these guidelines. As long as you adhere to our Terms of Service, these guidelines, and properly attribute as required, you are welcome to proceed with your project. However, it’s crucial to thoroughly review these guidelines to ensure your intended use is permitted. If your use case falls outside of these allowances, we are unable to grant exceptions, so please refrain from submitting a request.
For commercial applications where our mapping products are used to generate revenue, such as incorporating Google Maps or Street View into a mobile or web application, please utilize Google Maps Platform instead.
Copyright Fair Use Considerations for Google Street View
Your use of our content might be considered acceptable under the principles of fair use (or similar legal concepts in other countries). Fair use, under U.S. copyright law, generally permits the use of copyrighted material in certain contexts without needing direct permission from the copyright holder. Google is not authorized to provide legal counsel on whether your specific use qualifies as fair use. It is recommended to seek independent legal advice to determine if your intended use of Google Street View falls under fair use.
Personalizing Google Maps and Street View
You are allowed to annotate our maps with supplementary information, including points, lines, or labels. Many of our tools are designed with built-in functionalities to facilitate this personalization. For instance, Google My Maps enables you to draw lines and shapes directly on a Google Map. Furthermore, we offer a Styling Wizard and a cloud-based styling tool that give you the ability to modify the color schemes of different map elements (for example, changing the color of water bodies to purple), and control the visibility of each element (for example, hiding roads).
If these tools do not meet your specific requirements, you can export an image from Google Earth or Earth Studio, or take a screenshot from Google Maps, to incorporate custom labels or graphics using third-party software.
While we encourage map annotations, it is imperative that you do not significantly alter the visual presentation of Google Maps, Google Earth, Earth Studio, or Street View as they appear online. For example, you are prohibited from making changes to the color scheme of the product interface or removing any attribution.
Regarding Google Earth and Earth Studio content, you are not permitted to drastically modify our imagery without clearly indicating that it is a simulation, projection, or fictional content.
