Terrence Scott Melvin, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer, demonstrating remarkable grace and quiet strength. Born on June 19, 1951, in Fairview Park, Ohio, Terry’s life was deeply rooted in family, which served as the foundation for his many accomplishments and joys. Early Life and Education
Terry was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Claire, his brother Rik, and his cherished son Bryce. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Joan; his children Ryan, Tara (Sam) Mason, and Connor (Lauren Hjelmaas); his siblings Sharyn (Paul) Orr and Todd (Maria); and numerous nieces and nephews. His grandchildren, Liam and Tilly June Mason, will carry on the loving legacy of their Papadoo.
Terry was committed to education, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Ohio University in 1974. He continued his academic pursuits, obtaining an MBA from Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio, further solidifying his expertise and preparing him for a distinguished career.
Professional Achievements
Upon graduating, Terry began his professional journey with Ford Motor Company and later Davy McKee. These roles led him to long-term assignments in Venezuela and Mexico, experiences that enriched his life and earned him the affectionate nicknames “peluda” and “palo de escoba.” His career was marked by significant leadership roles at respected companies such as Raychem, Rosen Products, Broderson, and Arrow Acquisition, where he remained until his retirement in July 2023.
Throughout his illustrious career, Terry was known for his exceptional leadership, consistently guiding teams to achieve remarkable results. He viewed his work with passion, not merely as a job, fueled by an unwavering dedication to professional growth and team success. A significant highlight of Terry’s career was the extensive international travel his positions afforded him. He embraced the opportunity to immerse himself in diverse cultures and understand global business landscapes, enhancing his ability to lead teams effectively on an international scale.
Family Life and Passions
Over 43 years of marriage, Joan and Terry built a family characterized by adaptability and a spirit of adventure. Their life together took them to various locations including Cleveland, Chicago, San Francisco, Eugene, and Kansas City, creating a rich tapestry of experiences and memories.
Beyond his professional life, Terry had a deep passion for classic cars. During his college years, he acquired a 1966 Stingray Corvette, a prized possession he lovingly restored to its original splendor. He found joy in weekend drives with Joan and their beloved teacup Yorkie, Lily, who was a constant and cherished companion. Music was another lifelong passion for Terry. He played both bass and lead guitar and was a member of the band Kismet Maze in his younger years, showcasing his creative and artistic talents.
Terry’s humor and loyalty were defining characteristics that endeared him to all who knew him. His unwavering dedication to his family was the central guiding principle of his life. As his family mourns his passing, they find solace in the cherished memories of a life well-lived, filled with love and laughter.
Memorial Service and Reception Information
Services to honor Terry’s life will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at Wesley Covenant Chapel, located at 13720 Roe Avenue, Leawood, KS 66224 at 2pm. Following the service, a reception will be held at 4pm at Grand Street Lenexa, situated at 8815 Renner Blvd, Lenexa, KS 66219. This gathering at Grand Street Lenexa in Lenexa, KS will provide an opportunity for friends and family to share memories and celebrate Terry’s life together.
