Lake Street Dive has solidified their place in the modern music scene by consistently pushing the boundaries of pop. This dynamic five-piece band isn’t just about their unique sound—a vibrant fusion of soul, folk, jazz, and classic pop—but also their ability to forge a powerful connection with every audience. Their inclusive ethos transforms each concert into a shared experience, making them a truly beloved live act.
Their latest album, “Good Together,” delves deeper into this unifying mission. Vocalist Rachael Price, bassist and vocalist Bridget Kearney, drummer and vocalist Mike Calabrese, keyboardist and vocalist Akie Bermiss, and guitarist and vocalist James Cornelison have collectively focused their creative lens on the forces that often pull us apart in today’s world. They address themes such as the rapid pace of technology, societal isolation, and the relentless pressure of self-improvement. Emerging from what they call “joyful rebellion,” “Good Together” is an album that is both fiercely defiant and irresistibly danceable, promising sing-along anthems that resonate with a sense of shared joy.
Mike Calabrese explains the album’s driving force: “There’s a lot to be angry about right now, a lot of pain and rage and divisiveness, but it isn’t sustainable to constantly live in that anger—you need something else to keep you going. Joy is a great way to sustain yourself, and we wanted to encourage everyone to stay aware of that. In a way this album is our way of saying, ‘Take your joy very seriously.’”
Embracing this spirit of unity, “Good Together” marks a significant shift in Lake Street Dive’s songwriting process. For the first time, they collaborated from the very inception of their songs. In early 2023, the band convened at Calabrese’s Vermont home studio for an intensive week of songwriting. Their creative catalyst? A 20-sided die, a playful nod to Bermiss and Kearney’s lockdown Dungeons & Dragons sessions. Bridget Kearney details the unique method: “The captain of a particular song would roll the die, and the result would decide the chords, the meter, and the tempo for that song. We’d take those elements and jam for a while, go our separate ways and come up with lyrics and melodies, then come back together and workshop everything. It ended up taking us to new places we never would’ve gotten to otherwise, in terms of things like harmony and tempo and groove.” This highly collaborative environment not only expanded their sonic horizons but also deepened their artistic connection.
Rachael Price reflects on this new approach: “In the past we’d written pieces of songs and shared them with each other and built them up from there, but we always had the space to listen and reflect in total privacy. At first it was terrifying to write together in the same room, but as soon as we got started it felt so fun. We very quickly realized, ‘Oh, we need to do this again and again.’”
