StreetsLA is dedicated to ensuring Los Angeles is a safe, livable, sustainable, prosperous, and well-run city. To achieve this vision, StreetsLA undertakes a comprehensive array of planning, construction, maintenance, and enforcement activities. These efforts are crucial for upholding the City’s public works infrastructure and enhancing the daily experiences and overall quality of life for residents, visitors, and all stakeholders within Los Angeles City Streets. Through integration, innovation, and inclusion, StreetsLA strives to maintain a world-class street network that serves as the backbone of this vibrant metropolis.
Key Programs
Pavement Preservation
The Pavement Preservation Program is vital for maintaining the extensive network of Los Angeles city streets. This program oversees 23,000 lane miles and 800 miles of alleys, aiming to keep all improved streets, alleys, and thoroughfares in consistently good to excellent condition. By adhering to high standards of safety, visual appeal, and convenience, this program directly benefits residents, businesses, and visitors who rely on smooth and reliable Los Angeles city streets every day.
Street Tree & Median Maintenance
StreetsLA is responsible for managing nearly 700,000 street trees that thrive along 6,500 miles of public roads and parkways within Los Angeles city streets. This also includes the care of plants and shrubs on dedicated streets, center medians, and other public spaces. The city’s urban forest plays a critical role in providing shade for homes and streets, which naturally reduces energy consumption and mitigates the urban “heat island effect.” Furthermore, these trees contribute to cleaner air and increase property values, making Los Angeles city streets and neighborhoods cooler, more livable, and environmentally sustainable for everyone.
Street Improvement Construction
StreetsLA’s Street Improvement Construction program focuses on building enhancements to Los Angeles city streets that improve safety, accessibility, mobility, and overall community satisfaction. These improvements encompass a wide range of projects, including the installation of curb ramps, sidewalks, pedestrian and bicycle facilities, and bus landing facilities. Additionally, the program includes hardscaping, landscaping, and concrete construction, all contributing to making Los Angeles a more livable and sustainable urban environment through improved street infrastructure.
Street Sweeping
Operating one of the largest and most congested municipal street networks in the nation, StreetsLA diligently cleans 6,500 centerline miles of roadway. The Street Sweeping program utilizes clean, green, and energy-efficient street sweeping equipment daily across Los Angeles city streets. This initiative supports the Mayor’s Clean Streets Initiative, resulting in cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing conditions. Moreover, effective street sweeping plays a crucial role in protecting the environment by significantly reducing storm drain contamination and air pollution originating from Los Angeles city streets.
Sidewalk Repair
In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), StreetsLA’s Sidewalk Repair program addresses accessibility issues on Los Angeles city streets. Annually, the program repairs approximately 300,000 square feet of broken sidewalk pavement and installs ADA-compliant access ramps. These efforts are essential to ensure that Los Angeles city streets are readily accessible and usable by individuals with disabilities, thereby improving mobility, safety, and inclusivity for the disabled community and the city at large.
Street Maintenance
StreetsLA’s Street Maintenance program is dedicated to keeping the surfaces of Los Angeles city streets, concrete curbs, and related structures in optimal condition. This involves performing minor repairs, such as pothole repairs, to roadways, concrete structures, gutters, alleys, storm drains, and unimproved roadways. The program also includes the inspection and enforcement of private property weed abatement regulations for unimproved land parcels. This proactive approach minimizes fire, health, and safety hazards across Los Angeles city streets and adjacent areas.
Complete Streets
As a key component of the Mayor’s Complete Streets Program, StreetsLA focuses on enhancing the safety of corridors in areas with the most pressing needs for repair on Los Angeles city streets. The Complete Streets program delivers street reconstruction, sidewalk repair, and damaged curb and gutter repair. These comprehensive improvements are designed to significantly enhance the safety for all users of Los Angeles city streets, including motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Great Streets
Aligned with the Mayor’s Great Streets Initiative, StreetsLA is transforming streets into vibrant corridors of open space within Los Angeles city streets. This initiative focuses on improving pedestrian crosswalks, constructing concrete curb extensions and median islands, and installing street furniture and trees. The goal is to make neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles city streets safer, more accessible, and visually appealing for everyone to enjoy, fostering community and enhancing public spaces.
Investigation & Enforcement
StreetsLA provides crucial investigation, enforcement, and regulatory services to protect public property and combat blight across Los Angeles city streets and communities. This involves proactively enforcing municipal ordinances and laws. StreetsLA also investigates potential public safety hazards related to broken sidewalks, curbs, and driveway approaches. Furthermore, StreetsLA oversees the city’s Sidewalk Non-Compliant Vending Program, which became effective January 1, 2019, ensuring fair and regulated use of public spaces on Los Angeles city streets.
Cool LA – Cooling LA’s Neighborhood
In direct support of the Mayor’s “LA’s Green New Deal,” StreetsLA is expanding its innovative Cool Pavement Program to more roadways and parking lots across Los Angeles city streets. The department also continues to plant and water trees in residential neighborhoods. These combined efforts are vital for keeping Los Angeles city streets and neighborhoods cooler, more livable, and environmentally sustainable, directly addressing the challenges of urban heat and climate change.
Street Furniture
StreetsLA manages a wide array of sidewalk installations designed to enhance the safety, support, and comfort of transit riders, pedestrians, and all users of Los Angeles city streets sidewalks. The most recognizable examples are bus benches and transit shelters. StreetsLA is actively expanding and improving the Street Furniture program to further contribute to making Los Angeles city streets safe, mobile, and sustainable for its diverse population.
