As part of the city’s redevelopment, both the Appleton Street Sports Bar & Grill and the attached parking ramp were torn down. The space, including their shared basement, is currently being filled and transformed into a green area. However, for fans of the restaurant, the story didn’t end there.
With city relocation funds, the partners behind Appleton Street Sports Bar & Grill secured a new venue at 2731 N. Meade St. Nestled between Bargain Garden and Papa Murphy’s, this new spot was intended to become the Meade Street Bistro. Initial plans pointed towards a February reopening, but the timeline has since shifted.
Construction at the Meade Street location did commence, but progress appeared to stall, leaving locals wondering about the bistro’s status. Clyde Weycker, a partner in the venture, provided an update. “We’ve put it on hold,” Weycker stated, indicating a delay in the opening. However, he reassured that the project is still moving forward. “But we are going to go forward on it. My guess is it will be sometime in the fall. We are still working through our relocation package with the city.”
Despite the delays, Weycker highlighted a positive aspect: the bistro has managed to retain its key employees. While some part-time staff have sought opportunities elsewhere, the core team remains committed to the Meade Street Bistro project.
Patrons can anticipate a slightly different experience when Meade Street Bistro eventually opens its doors. Weycker noted, “It will be a comfortable atmosphere for our customers. It will be different from what they had at the old Appleton Street.” The new bistro aims to offer a welcoming ambiance, distinguishing itself from the sports bar atmosphere of its predecessor.
