Conquer Cincinnati’s Straight Street Hill Climb: Your Ultimate Guide

Cincinnati, Ohio, is gearing up once again for the legendary Straight Street Hill Climb, marking its 48th anniversary on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at 9:00 am. This isn’t just another race; it’s a test of grit, a battle against gravity, and a chance to conquer one of Cincinnati’s most formidable inclines. Prepare yourself for a unique challenge that will leave you breathless – literally.

What is the Straight Street Hill Climb?

Imagine a road so steep it feels like you’re running (or biking) straight up a wall. That’s Straight Street. This .36-mile course is a relentless uphill battle, a true “straight street” assault that packs a serious punch in a short distance. Don’t let the mileage fool you; the Straight Street Hill Climb is notorious for delivering two minutes of intense, self-inflicted, but ultimately rewarding, torture. Originating in 1976 by the Clifton Track Club, this event has become a beloved tradition for locals and a must-try for anyone seeking a unique racing experience.

Events for Every Level of Glutton for Punishment

The Straight Street Hill Climb offers events to cater to various levels of masochism, ensuring everyone can find their perfect dose of uphill agony:

The Classic Run/Walk/Ruck

This is where it all began. The classic run is a straightforward sprint to the top of Straight Street. It’s you versus the hill. For those seeking an extra layer of challenge, the Rucking category is available within the Run event. Rucking involves tackling the hill while carrying a weighted rucksack (backpack), with 22 lbs suggested as a sufficient weight. Consider it the “extra punishment” for those who truly relish a grueling workout.

The Bike Climb

Think running up Straight Street is tough? Try biking it! Many participants argue that the bike climb is even more demanding than the run. This event takes place on the same punishing course, challenging cyclists to conquer the steep incline and test their leg power and lung capacity. Decide for yourself which is the greater challenge – run or bike!

The Duathlon: The World’s Shortest (and Possibly Toughest)

For the ultimate test of endurance (and perhaps sanity), the Duathlon combines both the run and bike climbs. Yes, you read that right – run up Straight Street, then immediately bike up it. Dubbed the “World’s Shortest Duathlon” (to the best of our knowledge!), this event is designed for those who truly want to push their limits and earn bragging rights. The Duathlon takes place after the individual Run and Bike events, so prepare to dig deep.

Race Day Essentials: Everything You Need to Know

Planning to conquer Straight Street? Here’s your race day guide:

Registration: Online and Easy

Check-In: Head to the Top!

Race day check-in and packet pick-up will be located at the top of the hill, at the corner of University Court and Straight Street, from 7:30 AM to 8:45 AM. After checking in, you’ll make your way down to the starting line at the bottom of the hill on McMicken Street.

Race Start Time: 9:00 AM Sharp

The Run event kicks off promptly at 9:00 AM. It’s crucial to arrive early, not just to check in but also to allow time to get to the starting line at the bottom of Straight Street. With registration potentially busy, arriving early ensures you’re ready to go when the race begins.

Course Location: Straight Street, Clifton, Cincinnati

Straight Street is nestled near the University of Cincinnati in Clifton. For precise directions from your location, use this Google Maps link: 500 Straight Street, 45219. The coordinates are: 39.129862, -84.523702.

Parking: Early Bird Gets the Spot

While there’s ample parking in the Straight Street area, arriving early is highly recommended, especially on race day. Parking closer to the top of the hill is a smart strategy. Pro-tip: Drive straight to the top, check in, and then find your parking spot. This also gives you time for pre-race coffee or a warm-up before heading down to the start.

Awards and Recognition

The Straight Street Hill Climb celebrates achievement across various categories. Awards are presented for:

  • Overall Male and Female winners in the Run and Bike events.
  • Top three finishers in male and female age divisions for both Run and Bike events (Divisions: 12 and Under, 13-20, 21-34, 35-49, 50 and Over (Masters)).

  • Rucker awards based on participation in the Rucking category.

Awards ceremonies will be held at the top of the hill following the events.

Post-Race Celebration at Wiedemann’s Fine Beer

New for 2023 and continuing in 2024, the post-race celebration will be held at Wiedemann’s Fine Beer, Brewery & Pub, located at 4811 Vine St, Cincinnati, OH 45217. Share your war stories from the hill climb and enjoy some well-deserved refreshment!

Spectator Spots: Cheer from the Top (or Mid-Hill for Maximum Pain)

For the best spectator experience, position yourself near the top of Straight Street to witness the final push and triumphant finishes (and maybe some wobbly legs!). Spectators are encouraged to spread out along the course to cheer on participants throughout the climb.

Race Shirts and Stickers: Grab Your Swag

Commemorate your Straight Street conquest with race shirts and stickers! Classy technical long-sleeved race shirts are available for purchase for $18 (slightly more for XXL) but to guarantee your size, order by Thursday, October 31, 2024, due to potential supply chain delays. Discounted shirts from previous years will also be available – potential collector’s items! Don’t forget to add a cool .36 sticker to your signup for just $5.00.
