Discover the Delightful Flavors of Sun Street Breads in Minneapolis

Stepping into Sun Street Breads, you’re immediately greeted by a sense of warmth and familiarity. It’s as if this South Minneapolis gem, the brainchild of baker Solveig Tofte, has been a neighborhood staple for years, even though it was a new venture at the time of this review. Tofte’s beaming presence behind the counter perfectly encapsulates the inviting atmosphere of Sun Street Breads.

The bakery counter is a feast for the eyes, showcasing neatly stacked loaves of bread and glistening pastries, their buttery surfaces promising a sugary treat. Sunlight streams through the large windows, illuminating the happy patrons enjoying their morning fare. Even with just a simple “open” sign taped to the counter, Sun Street Breads already feels like a must-visit destination for anyone seeking exceptional baked goods in Minneapolis.

Located in a humble strip mall alongside everyday businesses, Sun Street Breads stands out with its cheerful ambiance. The open design, bright mural, and visible ovens create an inviting space, making it one of the most cheerful bakeries in Minneapolis. But the true magic lies in the creations of Solveig Tofte. While Sun Street Breads does offer loaves like the sublime “figgy rye,” the real draw is their breakfast and lunch menus. Tofte’s baking expertise shines through, elevated by a chef’s innovative touch.

The biscuit sandwiches are a highlight, boasting an incredibly fluffy texture that evokes memories of a small, cherished eatery in Memphis. The biscuits and gravy are tender, expertly spiced, and utterly memorable, so delicious they might just inspire a change in your travel plans. Solveig Tofte has truly crafted a biscuit and gravy combination that redefines deliciousness.

For lunch, the meatloaf sandwich, affectionately named “The Susan” ($9), is an absolute standout. This sandwich has a special connection to the food writing community, as Tofte consulted Susan Pagani, a meatloaf aficionado and author of Minnesota Lunch: From Pasties to Banh Mi. “The Susan” is a tribute to Pagani’s expertise and a must-try for any visitor.

Served on perfectly toasted potato flax bread, “The Susan” features a peppery and subtly flavored meatloaf that strikes a perfect balance. The addition of apple butter and fried shallot cream cheese brightens the flavor profile and enhances the juicy texture. This is a far cry from the dense, ketchup-laden meatloaf sandwiches of the past. At Sun Street Breads, the meatloaf sandwich is a revelation.

Overall, Sun Street Breads is a genuinely joyful place, serving perfectly executed food in a convenient Minneapolis location. It’s an ideal spot to meet friends and enjoy a delightful meal. This combination of atmosphere and quality makes Sun Street Breads a truly unbeatable destination.

A Trio of South Minneapolis Bakeries

The arrival of Sun Street Breads completes a remarkable trio of bakeries in South Minneapolis, all within a half-mile radius, yet each offering a unique experience. Alongside Patisserie 46 and Sweets Bakeshop, Sun Street Breads holds its own with its distinct style and offerings.

While Sun Street Breads focuses on comforting, down-to-earth classics with upscale touches like shallot cream cheese and fennel slaw, Sweets Bakeshop offers a more traditional bakeshop experience. Sweets, located just a block from Sun Street Breads in the former Madwoman Foods space, is perfect for those seeking a sweet indulgence later in the day, as it opens at 11 am.

Patisserie 46, situated five blocks west of Sun Street Breads, exudes Parisian elegance. With its sophisticated interior, gourmet desserts, and attentive staff, Patisserie 46 offers a more upscale bakery experience. It often feels bustling, reminiscent of a high school bake sale with eager staff ready to serve.

Although Sweets Bakeshop’s Minneapolis grand opening was slightly after this initial review (April 9th), these three bakeries have firmly established themselves in the neighborhood. Sun Street Breads seems destined to be a local favorite for years to come.

Perhaps the best testament to Sun Street Breads‘ lasting appeal comes from a junior food critic circle observed on a relaxed Sunday morning. Three young girls, each happily enjoying sticky cinnamon rolls, shared thumbs-up with each other after their first bites. This simple, genuine approval speaks volumes.

BEST BET: Don’t miss “The Susan” – this meatloaf sandwich is a true highlight of the lunch menu at Sun Street Breads.
