The 42nd Street Connection Program is underway to significantly enhance the subway experience beneath 42nd Street in New York City. This ambitious project focuses on upgrading key subway lines in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, promising improved accessibility, reduced congestion, and a more efficient commute for everyone.
A centerpiece of this initiative is the complete overhaul of the 42nd Street Shuttle. Completed in March 2021, the redesigned Shuttle now boasts a spacious island platform at the Times Square end, featuring tracks on both sides for easier and faster boarding. This newly ADA-accessible station entrance provides a more modern and welcoming access point. Similarly, the Grand Central side of the Shuttle has been streamlined into a two-track system with a significantly expanded platform. This expanded platform offers ample space for all passengers, including those with mobility devices, to comfortably board trains. Crucially, platform gaps have been eliminated, ensuring safer boarding for wheelchair users and individuals with other mobility aids. Travelers using the 42 St Shuttle can now appreciate these functional upgrades alongside the aesthetic enhancement of new mosaic tiling by the renowned artist Nick Cave.
Further improving connectivity, a new in-station transfer has been created between the Times Sq-42 St station and the 42 St-Bryant Park station. This free transfer provides seamless connections between the 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W, B, D, F, and M lines. The walls of this new transfer passageway are also adorned with captivating mosaic artwork by Nick Cave, adding an element of visual interest to the commuter experience.
Beyond these key improvements, the 42nd Street Connection Program includes the installation of new elevators and escalators throughout the station complex. New and expanded stairways are also being implemented to improve passenger flow. To further enhance the commuter experience, more digital information screens are being added to provide real-time updates and wayfinding assistance.
Expected to be fully completed in the fourth quarter of 2025, the 42nd Street Connection Program represents a significant investment in New York City’s transit infrastructure. These comprehensive upgrades will contribute to a more reliable and faster commute for New Yorkers and visitors alike, ensuring easier access to more of the city for everyone.
